hello, and welcome to freehand studio!
the short story
my name is Aliyah Burton. I’m a…
photographer ∙ graphic designer ∙ writer ∙ runner ∙ calligrapher ∙ sister ∙ daughter of the one true king
the longer story
I began blogging in 2014. At that time, my blog was called With Open Hands. For a while now, I’ve wanted to transform my “online journal” into a creative outlet where I can pursue my passion for taking priceless photos, and creating beautiful hand-lettering.
thus, freehand studio was born.
Even though my blog is taking a different path than online journaling, you’ll find plenty of authentic, heartfelt entries on this blog, bringing the studio to life by offering glimpses of my world.
Beyond creative pursuits and online sharing, I’m a follower and learning lover of Jesus Christ, saved by His grace alone. I will never stop praising Him for all He is and all He’s done, so you’ll find that unashamedly written in my blog posts and influencing the way I do life.
My blog posts fall into three main categories: musings, photography, and design. You’ll find that other parts of my life find their way in between the lines, like running cross-country and track. Oh, and chasing my eleven (yes, eleven!) siblings around.
I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember. I love telling stories and jotting down thoughts of any kind. It’s how I process things. Writing has been my way of expressing joy, expressing sorrow, or just getting my “musings” out. This blog is just one of many places I write my many thoughts and musings down. In addition to this blog, I’ve written one complete novel, and have done a few independent articles for other blogs. Learn more about my writing journey here.
Photography has been a huge part of my world for about four years now. I have tried many kinds of photography, including sports, food, and landscape. But nothing can quite match the joy I feel when I’m capturing real people in real moments. Seniors and newborns are two of my favorite categories. View my photography portfolio here.
It was probably two years ago when I first started getting interested in graphic design and hand lettering. It seemed only natural to combine my photography with either digital or hand-drawn letters, playing around with the layout and colors to create images for my blog. One thing led to another, and here I am, in love with modern calligraphy and brush lettering. I combine these hand-drawn elements with digital components to create greeting cards, prints, and other products. The online shop for my artwork will be opening soon!
